Historical P/E ratios, explained with filed data
Use consistent fiscal-year snapshots to understand how a company’s earnings multiple changed—without confusing historical P/E with today’s valuation.
What historical P/E can—and cannot—tell you
A P/E ratio relates a stock price to earnings per share. Comparing the same company across fiscal year ends can show how much investors paid for each dollar of annual earnings at different points in time. It does not explain why the multiple changed, and comparisons across sectors can be misleading.
Our historical series uses the adjusted monthly close at or immediately before each fiscal year end divided by positive diluted EPS from that annual filing. It is not a live P/E, forward estimate or recommendation. Years with zero or negative EPS are deliberately omitted rather than presented as a meaningful multiple.
